The first day of the Melbourne Cup carnival has been completed, with Flemington welcoming a crowd back and the rain holding off for most of the meeting.
Damien Oliver had two superb steers for two wins, but the most successful jockey of the day was James McDonald, the raider from Sydney.
He clinched the last race on Minhaaj ($3.70) to make it four wins for the day.
John Allen got the chocolates in the feature event with a super ride on Hitotsu in the Derby.

Icebath($6.50) fell into second and only just pippedCascadian($13), who looked the winner until the final 100m.

He steeredHome Affairs($5) home, blitzing the field in the final 200 metres to finish ahead ofBruckner($81) andArtorious($9).
McDonald is making his mark on Melbourne already. He will ride Verry Elleegant in the Melbourne Cup.
Top Melbourne jockey John Allen backed up his Cox Plate victory by producing a brilliant ride to steerHitotsu($4) home in the Victoria Derby.
The punters had come for Ciaron Maher and David Eustace runner late, with Hitotsu smashed into favouritism just before the jump.
It had to sit at the back of the field for the majority and at the top of the straight it looked to be in some serious trouble, with a wall of horses in front of it.
But Allen guided the favourite through the field beautifully and snatched the lead fromAlegron($6) to win easily in the end.
Teewaters($31) ran third and long oddsRaging Bull($101) got up for fourth.
A peach of a ride from veteran jockey Damien Oliver along the rails steeredColette($12) home, narrowly beatingMystic Journey($7) andHungry Heart($9.50).
Justacantasteamed home paying $19 under Dean Yendall to beat homeKemalpasa($3.90) andIsaurian($13).
Forgot Youcan cause havoc on the Melbourne Cup order of entry with its run in the Victoria Derby.
The $5.50 Derby chance is currently 29th on the order of entry for the Cup, but can jump into the final field of 24 with a strong performance today.
Forgot You will be elevated into the top 24 for the Melbourne Cup if it runs first or second in the Derby.
If it runs third, it will be level with Floating Artist in 25th spot... although that spot may end up making the field.
Willowy($11) flew home late to pipDaisies($7) on the post, withDouceur($34) running third.
